How do I qualify as a driving instructor?
To qualify as a driving instructor, you must successfully complete three rigorous tests by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Part 1: Theory Test This stage assesses your theoretical knowledge through two components:
  • Multiple-Choice Questions: Answer 100 questions covering road safety, driving techniques, and instructional knowledge. Hazard Perception Videos: Analyse 14 video clips to identify potential hazards and demonstrate your ability to anticipate risks.

Part 2: Advanced Driving Test This practical examination evaluates your advanced driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code. You must demonstrate a high standard of control, observation, and awareness throughout the test.
Part 3: Instructional Ability Test This final stage involves delivering a real, 1-hour driving lesson. Your performance will be assessed across three critical categories:
  • Lesson Planning: Structuring a session to suit the pupil’s needs.
  • Risk Management: Ensuring the safety of the pupil and other road users.
  • Teaching and Learning Strategies: Effectively communicating and adapting instructional techniques.
